Gay Wedding Bells

UK Gay Marriage

The UK has finally passed legislation allowing gay couples to get legally married in the United Kingdom and if you listen closely you can probably hear wedding bells off in the distance celebrating the occasion. Jan Tipper and Barb Burden were the first gay couple to take advantage of this ground-breaking change in the law. They tied the knot at the Metropolitan community church in Bournemouth, Dorset after the law was passed on the 29 March 2014. The Reverend Dwayne Morgan performed the ceremony and was proud to be part of such an historic event.

The loving lesbian couple had already been together for 19 years, but said they felt their relationship just wasn’t quite right without religious blessings and legal ceremonies. They had both attended the church since 1999, and now feel that they have the same blessing for their relationship as every other married couple.

Sadly, not everyone shares the view that a gay couple should have the same rights as a straight couple. The former Tory, David Silvester, haplessly claimed he had warned David Cameron about passing this new law. He ignorantly suggested the flooding that ruined the UK earlier in the year was a direct result of allowing gays to marry on the strange theory that Cameron had behaved “arrogantly against the gospel”.

Silvester wrote a letter to the Henley Standard: “The scriptures make it abundantly clear that a Christian nation that abandons its faith and acts contrary to the Gospel (and in naked breach of a coronation oath) will be beset by natural disasters such as storms, disease, pestilence and war. I wrote to David Cameron in April 2012 to warn him that disasters would accompany the passage of his same-sex marriage bill. But he went ahead despite a 600,000-signature petition by concerned Christians and more than half of his own parliamentary party saying that he should not do so.”

UKIP initially issued statements saying that Silvester was entitled to his views. However, they soon changed their mind after immense public outcry and have since suspended him for these crazy homophobic rants. We’re happy to see equal rights for all and glad the United Kingdom has passed this legislation, but married lesbians like Jan Tipper and Barb Burden are likely even happier about it than all of us. Enjoy your honeymoon ladies!
